TGS 2015: Sony Renames Project Morpheus; 'Final Fantasy 14 Online' VR Confirmed

Sony has recently announced that its virtual reality headset, Project Morpheus, has a new name: PlayStation VR. It was said that Atsushi Morita, president of Sony Computer Entertainment Japan and Asia, has announced the PlayStation 4 VR headset during the company's press conference at Tokyo Game Show this week, IGN reported on Wednesday.

"Sony's virtual reality device has yet to receive a consumer price point, but several virtual reality projects were shown off in a new trailer with the name announcement. This included the confirmation that Square Enix's new Final Fantasy title, Final Fantasy XIV Online, will receive VR support. Details on how virtual reality will be integrated into the MMO are currently scarce, but we may find out more as TGS progresses," the report said.

Polygon reports that Morita has also revealed a group of games and demo that will be playable on the newly renamed PlayStation 4 VR headset during the whole duration of the Tokyo Game Show 2015. These games are "Final Fantasy 14 Online", "Summer Lesson," "Kitchen," "Dynasty Warriors 7 VR" demo, "Rigs," "Joysound VR," and "Hatsune Miku VR Tech" demo.

It can be recalled that Sony introduced the VR headset at GDC last year. A prototype of then "Project Morpheus" has been unveiled and demoed for PlayStation 4.

The company claims that the new VR headset features an OLED display. The VR headset also has a refresh rate of 120 Hz, which will allow players to deliver seamless and incredibly smooth videos. It can also render games at 120 frames per second, which is an ideal rate for VR.

The hardware will also offer latency under 18 milliseconds, less than half of the first Morpheus hardware. It will have a 5.7-inch screen with about 100-degree field of view. There are also now nine tracking LEDS, three more than the previous prototype, according to Polygon.

Sony's PlayStation VR is expected to be available sometime in the first half of 2016. The company has yet to announce the price of the device, but fans of the VR headset are hoping that it will be sold cheaper.
