Zimbabwe's President Reads the Wrong Speech at the Opening of Parliament

After reading the wrong speech at parliament, the opposition now calls for the resignation of Zimbabwe's President Robert Mugabe, believing that he is "'no longer fit for purpose" according to a news report on The Guardian.

The wrong speech that the 91-year-old president gave at the opening of parliament was the same speech he delivered on August 25 during his State-of-the-Nation address, the time when the president was booed by opposition MPs according to a report on BBC News.

In a Yahoo news article, it stated that the president went on reading his twenty-five minute speech without knowing that it is not the speech he was set to deliver for the occasion.

Little did Mugabe know that he had already given that speech when he was seeking after China's help in reviving the struggling economy of Zimbabwe according to an article on Reuters.

Spokesman George Charamba was quoted to have said that "The mix-up happened in his secretarial office; therefore the delivery in parliament should be set aside," as cited in an article on The Guardian.

However, the Movement for Democratic Change questioned Mugabe's fitness to continue holding his office. Obert Gutu, the MDC spokesman, told Reuters: "This is a historic blunder. Anyone who is still of a sound mind would have quickly picked it up that the speech was the wrong one. But it dovetails with what we in the MDC have been saying that Robert Mugabe is no longer fit for purpose. He should resign."

Following MDC's threat to disrupt the event, the parliament immediately suspended live coverage as well as radio broadcasting of the president's speech as reported on The Guardian.

The long-time President arrived at the parliament with his wife Grace. As is customary, the leader inspected a guard of honor, and was likewise treated to a fly-past by 3 fighter jets as well as to a 21-gun salute.
