Gary Richrath, former REO Speedwagon guitarist, passed away on Sunday, September 13. He was 65.
The news came from REO Speedwagon lead singer, Kevin Cronin, who posted the message on the band's official facebook page, states Billboard. Cronin wrote, "My longtime friend and collaborator Gary Richrath passed away earlier today. I feel so sad. Gary was both a unique guitarist and songwriter, and the embodiment of the tough guy with a heart of gold. I learned most of what I know about being in a rock band from Gary Richrath. The entire REO Family mourns his death and shares in the grief of his family, friends, and fans. These words do not come close to expressing the depth of emotions I am feeling at this time..."
Cronin also uploaded an old photo of Richrath playing on the guitar. He also mentioned in his Facebook post, saying, "This photo has been on my music room table for as long as I can remember, and will stay there."
Richrath joined REO Speedwagon during the late 1960s, according to CNN, just in time for the band's 1971 debut album. The band was reportedly on a constant tour during the 1970s and earned a solid fan base, especially in the group's Midwest hometown. REO Speedwagon only broke through radio in the late 1970s. In the 1981, the band released its blockbuster song "Hi Fidelity" which catapulted REO Speedwagon to even greater popularity.
The CNN report went on to state how the former REO Speedwagon guitarist was still with the band when they released hit singles such as "Keep on Lovin' You," "Can't Fight This Feeling" and other Top Forty hits. Richrath left the band in 1989 but rejoined REO Speedwagon to perform in a 2013 concert held in Bloomington, Illinois to benefit tornado victims.
The reports did not indicate the late guitarist's cause of death.
