Taylor Swift is being sued over a cancelled concert in Canada to the tune of $1.8 million.
Swift is facing a lawsuit after being paid $2.5 million in advance to headline a country music festival in Canada which has since been cancelled, reports TMZ.
Promoters for Capital Hoedown - which was due to take place in Ottawa in August 2012 - reportedly failed to put the concert together in time and it was subsequently cancelled. Swift is reported to have already cashed the check and festival organizers had to issue $1.8 million in concert ticket refunds.
Swift has responded that cancellation was the fault of the promoter, who failed to organize the show together in time for the big day, and that they made no such deal with the promoters to cover their losses.
Los Angeles entertainment attorney Michael Ackerman explains that, from what he can discern of the suit, it may not be that simple.
Although it may seem that Swift earned $2.5 million scot-free, there is much more going on behind the scenes that fans may not realize. "In the boldface headline it seems very black and white: She made 2.5 million dollars, and I got nothing," Ackerman notes.
But..."She did do something-she held the date," he states, explaining that it is standard for an artist to collect a percentage of their fee ahead of an appearance.
After all, "That's a date that she's not taking other work. There may not be time to rebook."
