A highschool student in Irving, Texas shook the world with his invention. Ahmed Mohamed went to school with a digital clock made out of a pencil case last Monday. The 14-year-old student was psyched to show it to his teacher as he is motivated to become an engineer.
His invention shook the world, simply because he was arrested instead of getting acknowledged for a job well done. As per CNN, Ahmed was arrested by the police after a teacher that saw his invention called the authorities. The 14-year-old boy was led out of school in handcuffs.
Ahmed opened up to the media during an interview on his front yard last Wednesday.
"I built a clock to impress my teacher but when I showed it to her, she thought it was a threat to her, it was really sad that she took the wrong impression of it."
He then added: "They arrested me and they told me that I committed the crime of a hoax bomb, a fake bomb."
Due to this occurrence, numerous supporters stood up for Ahmed with a goal to stop racism. BBC then reported that a college student from Texas started her hashtag movement to create awareness, not knowing it would make it big. The hashtag #IStandWithAhmed was created by Amneh Jafari, a 23-year-old Psychology student. It is when she posted: "If his name was John he would be labelled as a genius. Since its Ahmed he's labelled as a "suspect". #doublestandards #IStandWithAhmed."
Muslim groups, celebrities, engineers, and politicians did their part in helping Ahmed make a stand. Even the President Barack Obama showed his support by inviting Ahmed to the White House.
On one of his posts, the Facebook creator Mark Zuckenberg showed his support too.it is when he wrote:
"Having the skill and ambition to build something cool should lead to applause, not arrest. The future belongs to people like Ahmed." "Ahmed, if you ever want to come by Facebook, I'd love to meet you. Keep building."
