'Star Trek: Beyond' Release Date Delayed, Hopes for An IMAX Opening

Paramount revealed that its next "Star Trek" installment was pushed back two weeks later from July 8 to July 22, 2016, Newsarama reported.

The reason of such move wasn't specified by the studio but according to Digital Trends, the change of date is "all in the name of getting Captain Kirk, Spock, and the rest of the gang on Imax theaters."

The Justin Lin-directed film will be released on the same day with Fox's next "Ice Age" sequel and Warner Bros.' "Knights of the Roundtable: King Arthur."

On its old release date, Star Trek would forgo an IMAX run since the film "Tarzan" will be showing on special venues on July 1 and already has an IMAX bid.

Because of the schedule change of this third installment sci-fi film franchise, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Warners' King Arthur, directed by Guy Ritchie and starring Charlie Hunnam, might move its release date.

This "Star Trek" series from Paramount and Skydance returns franchise stars Chris Pine, Simon Pegg, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana and Anton Yelchin. Meanwhile, it was reported that Idris Elba joins the cast for a major villain role, according to Cinema Blend.

Director Lin took over J.J. Adams who directed the previous prequels of the movie that included 2009’s "Star Trek" and 2013’s "Star Trek: Into the Darkness." Lin is said to bring a different vibe into the upcoming sci-fi action film.

In MTV's interview with Quinto, the actor said about the "Fast and Furious" director, “He knows exactly what he wants this movie to look like and that’s really exciting.” He added that Lin’s energy is “a little bit more reserved and a little bit quieter” than that of Abrams, but it is “very powerful and really sure-handed.”

Back in 2013, the “Star Trek Into Darkness” grossed $467 million worldwide including $229 million earnings domestically.

The film will also mark its 50-year anniversary of the television science-fiction series that debuted on Sept. 8, 1966, on NBC that was aired in three seasons.
