Only two days left and "Gotham" will be returning to television with its second season. Entertainment Weekly has secured a short but very telling teaser aptly called "New Day, Dark Nights."
The teaser reveals that the show is taking a different and darker turn for its sophomore season. New villains are expected to visit and stay at the city, and fans will be seeing the fall of their main hero. As EW has reported, amidst the chaos in Gotham City, the commissioner will demote Detective Gordon as a traffic cop.
Aside from the storyline, the bigger change that the show is adopting is its format. This season will be divided into two, with 11 episodes per part. This new direction will make the show more "serialized" and continuous.
"We're aiming for a grander, saga-type construction in which we can actually sit with the characters and understand their motivations and how the turbulence of their lives affects the greater landscape," Ben McKenzie, the actor portraying Detective James Gorden, told EW.
Executive producer Danny Cannon adds, "What we've done is up the ante a level. So when we call this season the rise of the villains, it's very much that. More villains move in to take their piece of the pie and Gordon has to go to very extreme measures to quell the chaos that ensues."
Cannon is talking about the long list of villains queued to appear on the show. Clayface, Mr. Freeze, Flamingo, Firefly, Tigress, and Silver St. Cloud have all been confirmed to be new additions. But there's a specific villain all fans are excited to see -- Joker.
In last season's 16th episode, a character named Jerome (played by Cameron Monaghan) appeared and hinted that he may be The Joker. Monaghan has recently posted on Instagram a picture of him looking very much like Joker, much to the fans' excitement.
Cannon has already confirmed that Monghan, the maybe-Joker, is indeed coming back for season two, telling the fans not to miss the first episodes. "Jerome is very much in those, and Cameron Monaghan does an absolutely fantastic job in the role," the producer said.
With the new evil minds on board and Detective Gordon out of the loop, it will be interesting to watch how the fallen hero attempts to rise and try to save Gotham City.
Looking at all angles, "Gotham" season two is turning out to be more turbulent, more chaotic, and definitely more thrilling than ever. It premieres on Monday, Sept. 21, on Fox.
