On "Once Upon a Time" Season 5, producers Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis revealed that they will be exploring an LGBT romance in the storyline.
There are speculations that Mulan (Jamie Chung) would have a relationship with Aurora (Sarah Bolger). When the producers were asked about this, Kitsis said, "We know that community have been big supporters of the show and we would love to be able to tell a love story that reflects that."
"We want the show to reflect the world as it is now," said Horowitz, according to Entertainment Weekly. "Whether that's going to be with any particular character, we're not going to say."
Kitsis added that it is something they will do this year for the return of the series on TV screens.
"It's something we want to do this year," Horowitz continued. "It's something we think is due and important to do on the show. This is the world we live in."
The bosses refused to give a hint about which characters would be involved in the LGBT relationship. While mostly would bet on Mulan's character, there is still a possibility that it will be realized through other casts since new characters from Camelot will be introduced, E! Online reported.
Whoever is involved in the relationship, it will be the first time that "Once Upon a Time" will explore this kind of story.
Meanwhile, Chung's character Mulan will return to the Season 5 after her absence from the entire Season 4. On her last appearance on Season 3, Mulan joined Robin Hood and the Merry Men in the forest following a broken heart when she learned about Princess Aurora's (Sarah Bolger) pregnancy with Prince Philip (Julian Morris).
Mulan isn't the only one returning, Meghan Ory's Red Riding Hood/Ruby Lucas will also have a comeback in Season 5. Other familiar characters would also be back on future episodes.
"We wish we could have the resources to have every character we've ever had on the show on it every episode, and then have three hour episodes and have unlimited time to make the episodes and unlimited money, but we don't. We try to balance it," Horowitz said, according to IGN. "It's been a while since we've seen Mulan and Ruby, and we've been thinking about them for a while. We hope the audience has too."
Aside from the alleged LGBT plot, there are surprises from the episodes that would "bring love, loss and destiny to the forefront," Hypable wrote. Five teasers were mentioned by Hypable, after watching the "Once Upon a Time" Season 5 premiere, that includes the dagger's history, new enchanted objects which is said to be one of the most iconic objects in a Disney film, no major curse will be involved, returning characters to the forefront of a battle whose "little voices" will be heard, and the adventure of the characters as they save Emma from Camelot.
Horowitz also teased on Twitter that the upcoming seventh episode would be entitled "Nimue," which means "Lady of the Lake," the same episode where Mulan appeared on Season 2.
The series returns to ABC on Sept. 27, 2015 at 8:00 P.M.
