Temptations singer Otis "Damon" Harris died on Monday, Feb. 18 after battling prostate cancer, reports the Baltimore Sun. Harris was 62.
Harris died at the Joseph Richey Hospice in Baltimore after losing a 14-year-long battle with prostate cancer, according to family spokesman Chuck Woodson. The Temptations singer was in remission until three years ago. The cancer had "gotten pretty bad" by the end of last summer, Woodson said, which resulted in Harris staying in the hospital from last November and was transferred to a hospice last week.
Harris joined the Temptations in 1971 at the age of 21 after the departure of original band member Eddie Kendricks. Harris took over lead singer and sang on their hit song, 'Papa Was A Rollin' Stone'.
He won three Grammy Awards with the group. Harris sang with the Temptations until 1975, helping the group win three Grammy awards and lending his voice to hits including "Take a Look Around" and "Masterpiece."
After the Temptations singer was diagnosed with prostate cancer, he went on to become an advocate for men getting regular prostate exams. Harris was also active with the organization Stand Up to Cancer.
Woodson said Harris became vocal about cancer awareness because he had waited too long to get checked by a doctor.
