"Ordinary People," a romantic comedy series created by couple John Legend and Chrissy Teigen has received green light from ABC.
John Legend's hit song "Ordinary People" is also the title of the new TV series coming to ABC which the singer and his wife Teigen created based on their own love story and relationship. According to Variety, the show will revolve around two individuals of different racial background and personalities. Both have big plans for the future and music will play a central role in the series, which is a nod to Legend's background and career. ABC Studios has put in an order for the pilot episode and will partner with Legendary Television and Get Lifted Film Company that Legend is also part of.
In a report by Vanity Fair, the sitcom has no ties to the "Ordinary People" movie released in 1980 which starred Robert Redford. Even Legend's hit song will not be made a reference for the show's theme although it will be featured as part of the soundtrack. The romantic comedy-themed series will be a single-camera affair that producers say will also have some elements of a musical incorporated. Despite the project being close to Legend and Teigen, the couple said the series will not be completely about their marriage and is only a loose adaptation.
They have also confirmed that Teigen and Legend will not be a part of the cast nor will they make an appearance in any of the episodes. Kenya Barris, creator of "Black-ish" will be the executive producer. And trying to keep things under wrap, he said, "We don't know what's going to be what. But it will be a part of the show in terms of showing those two worlds colliding and coming together--their issues and their obstacles that [happen inside] their personal relationship."
