The "Kaijus" might have emerged victorious as rumors of "Pacific Rim 2" being cancelled is circulating. According to Slashfilm.com, based on the detailed report of The Hollywood Reporter on what is going on with Legendary Pictures, Universal, and Warner Brothers, the "Pacific Rim 2" release date is being pushed back, with possibility of a cancellation, because of budget concerns. It was also reported that the first movie had a budget of $190 million.
"Pacific Rim" was able to get over $400 million worldwide, but the domestic performance only garnered a little over half the production cost which is why the producers are hesitant to take a risk with a sequel.
On the other hand, According to IGN, "Pacific Rim" director Guillermo del Toro has confirmed that "Pacific Rim 2" will move ahead with production. In an interview, he said to IGN, "It's not cancelled. I'm gonna do a little movie in between, if [the studio] deem[s] to approve it. But in the meantime we're turning in a budget and a script in three weeks [on Pacific Rim 2]. So it's still active. I still have my producer working on the budget and I still have the writer working on the script."
And speaking of the other movies, "Godzilla" and "Kong: Skull Island," both having giant monsters just like "Pacific Rim," he has told IGN, "I don't know where that [talk] came from. And I really don't think it can. I mean, they can do whatever they want -- it's their universe, they own the property. But I don't see how they can. I don't see them mashing together. People say, somebody said, 'Would you like it?' I said, 'Yeah, it would be cool.' But I was not really proposing something definitely!"
Originally, "Pacific Rim 2" was scheduled to begin production this November in Toronto and will be released in August 2017. According to Latino-Review, the production has been pushed back to 2016 with no further details of a specific date or month. Legendary Pictures reportedly has not yet given a word as to when production will be moved.
