Famous New York restaurateur, Elaine Kaufman's penthouse in New York was listed for sale with an asking price of $2.9 million when she passed away in 2010. The penthouse ultimately sold for just $1.92 million to an anonymous media consultant.
The New York Post first reported the news of the sale. Considering Kaufman's reputation for her restaurant, "Elaine's" the penthouse sold for a real low price.
The penthouse is a 2 bedroom - 3 bathroom residence that has a 1,600 square-foot terrace wrapped around it. A large foyer leads into a large living room. On the left of the living room lies a formal dining area that opens into a modern kitchen. The master suite and the other bedroom lies to the right of the central living room. Located atop the Yorkshire building, the residence provides scenic views of the New York skyline, reports Curbed.
Kaufman started her restaurant career in 1959 in Greenwich Village in Portofino, Italy, helping her then boyfriend - Alfredo Viazzi. Four years later, she moved to the Upper East side area of New York where she started her restaurant. Many Portofinians followed her to New York and thus began the legacy of a famed restaurateur.
Her initial intent was to build a place for brooding and potential writers, and she achieved it successfully. In 2003, Kaufman was designated as a living landmark by the New York Landmarks Conservancy.
The restaurant closed six months after her death. Kaufman passed away in December 2010 in the Lenox hospital in Manhattan. She was 81. To honor her encouragement to writers, several Elaine's regulars formed a association- "The Table 4 Writers Foundation". The foundation gives out grants worth $2,000 to budding and aspiring New York writers.
