Last Tuesday, Sept. 22, Pope Francis arrived in the United States to begin his five-day visit in the country. U.S. President Barrack Obama was joined by his entire family in welcoming the Roman Catholic leader as his plane landed on Joint Base Andrews, Maryland. Even the first daughters, Malia and Sasha, skipped school for the day to be part of this historic occasion.
Fashion watchers worldwide quickly zoomed in on what they wore to the event and were pleased by what they saw.
The First Lady looked stunning in a belted, powder blue dress with a cowl neckline and a hemline that fell just below the knees. The dress was made by Carolina Herrera, one of Mrs. Obama's favorite designers. Politico detailed the multiple occasions in the past when the First Lady has chosen the designer. During the White House State Dinner last year, Mrs. Obama was criticized for wearing an intricately beautiful but excessively expensive $12,000 Carolina Herrera gown. Yesterday though, Daily Mail called the First Lady's fashion choice as "impeccable." She kept her hair down and her makeup simple, and finished the look with kitten-heeled silver shoes.
Sixteen-year-old Malia, who is now as tall as her mother, kept it simple, wearing a black top paired with a knee-length skirt with floral patterns. Her sister Sasha, 14, was also put-together, wearing a similar short-sleeved black top and a Kate Spade pleated skirt in pink, grey, and white color blocking. Both girls opted to wear ballet flats to finish their stylish ensembles.
Hollywood Life called the Obama ladies' style as "appropriate, conservative, and chic."
Pope Francis is the third pope to visit the United States and meet with an American president. As reported by USA Today, the Pope is also scheduled to head off to Philadelphia and New York, where he will hold masses at St. Patrick's Cathedral and Madison Square Garden.
