Frank Gehry to Design New Hotel Tower and Art Museum in Santa Monica

Renowned starchitect, Frank Gehry, has just revealed designs and artworks of his next project - a 22 story building in downtown Santa Monica.

Plans of the building were submitted to the city officials Thursday, Feb. 28, by the developers of the site, Worthe Real Estate and M. David Paul and Associates. The building will be around 224 feet tall and comprise of 125 hotel rooms and 22 condominiums.

The building will have two stories of restaurant and retail space and a triple story parking lot to accommodate 460 cars, reports Curbed.

In addition to the building, plans of converting a Victorian house and a Spanish Colonial landmarked property into a 36,000 square feet art décor museum, were also revealed. The museum campus will have a rooftop observation deck and an underground exhibition space, reports Santa Monica Patch.

The $72.7 million project will give around $4 million in revenue taxes to the city and create around 1,394 construction jobs.

"We've owned the majority of this property for decades and have been searching for the right project for this very special site and for Santa Monica. We are excited about the potential to create a new cultural anchor for residents and visitors." David Paul, president of M. David Paul Associates, said in a statement.

The project is Gehry's first development in his hometown of Santa Monica in the last 25 years. He had built the Edgemar Retail Complex on Main Street and also bought a house, which he designed with chain fencing and glass in 1971. The home created a lot of controversy. Gehry had also designed the original Santa Monica Place Mall, which was completely redesigned in 2008.

Gehry's most famous creations remain the "Walt Disney Concert Hall," which he designed in 2003 and the titanium covered, "Guggenheim Museum" in Bilbao. His "Dancing House" in Prague is also a stunning work of architecture.
