Game developer Capcom on Friday has confirmed that "Street Fighter 5" will not feature an disc containing the new free downloadable contents when the game launches, a report from IGN said.
Speaking at the Tokyo Game Show 2015, Capcom producer Matt Dahlgren was quoted as saying in the report, "There will not be on-disc DLC, for sure."
It can be recalled that the on-disc DLC has been the subject of controversy when "Street Fighter x Tekken" was launched in 2012. Prior to the game's official launch, Capcom had previously announced that there will be a total of 12 downloadable characters that will be featured and loaded onto the disc.
"Capcom has had shaky history where on-disc DLC is concerned, especially in the Street Fighter series. 2012's Street Fighter X Tekken notoriously held what were to be PlayStation Vita-exclusive characters (Pac-Man, Mega Man, etc.) behind a DLC paywall by having them contained on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 discs of the game while requiring a future DLC purchase to be made on those platforms when the characters would stop being exclusive to PS Vita. Capcom's explanation for including DLC on the console discs for Street Fighter X Tekken boiled down to a technical decision, saying it would save hard drive space for players on PS3 and Xbox 360," Gameranx said.
Gamespot reports that Capcom is now taking a more secure approach and plans to have a post-launch updates for "Street Fighter 5." The company also intends to offer players a single disc containing the game's future DLCs.
Players who want to avail the disc will either pay using a premium currency, which costs actual cash, or buy with an in-game currency by simply playing the game. So far, the only DLC for the game that was revealed are the alternate costumes, and these can be obtained if players pre-order from various retail stores.
"Capcom announced its DLC plans back in July, stating Street Fighter 5 players would only ever need to purchase the initial version of the game. All future content will be available digitally," IGN said.
"Street Fighter 5" is slated to be launched on March 31, 2016 for PC and PS4.
