‘Hotel Transylvania 2’ Movie Review: A Decent Sequel Kids Will Love

"Hotel Transylvania 2" is a sequel made for children's viewing pleasure to which it succeeds without question. However, movie viewers who expect more from Adam Sandler and company will likely be disappointed.

In "Hotel Transylvania 2," Dracula (Sandler) has opened his hotel to humans after agreeing to let his daughter Mavis (Selena Gomez) marry human Jonathan (Andy Samberg). The couple gives birth to Dennis, a half-vampire, half-human baby boy who will be the movie's central theme.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Dracula is ecstatic to be a "vampa" or vampire grandpa but when he finds out that his grandson has taken after his father who has no fangs, he tries desperately to make the boy unleash the monster in him. And to make matters worse for the vampire count, Mavis decides to move out of the hotel and take her family to her husband's hometown in California. Dracula must now prove that the boy belongs nowhere else but in Hotel Transylvania.

In a review by ABC News, it was mentioned that Sandler's recent movie prior to "Hotel Transylvania 2" called "Pixels" was disliked by many critics and viewers. This latest film to feature the comedian's voice is seen by many as a way for him to redeem himself and make people warm up to his brand of comedy again.

Genndy Tartakovsky returns as director and he clearly knows his way around kids as they find the movie's visuals really funny and delightfully silly. Sandler and Robert Smigel teamed up to make the script which did its job of making children laugh their hearts out. However, there are many jokes that only adult viewers can understand and appreciate which is a Sandler trademark. The overall consensus for "Hotel Transylvania 2" is that it accomplished its goal of bettering the original film but not by a big margin.
