‘Death Note 2016’ New Live Action Release of Popular Anime Underway

Warner Japan and Nippon TV are producing the third live action adaptation of the popular anime "Death Note."

The movie's working title is "Death Note 2016" and is based on the manga created by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata. Shinsuke Sato will direct the movie which will focus on six notebooks, according to Design & Trend. Sato is the man behind the hit movies "Gantz" and "Toshokan Senso."

Otaku Mode reported that the announcement came in the final episode of "Death Note" TV drama on Nippon TV along with a special teaser video. In 2006, two films adaptation were released - "Death Note" and "Death Note: The Last Name" and the new film will be an update to the two. This means that the 2016 film will be entirely new and a sequel to the previous two.

"Death Note" is about a notebook that allows its possessor to kill anyone by writing their names in the pages. One person who discovered a mysterious notebook is a college genius Light Yagami (Tatsuya Fujiwara) who went to a killing spree when he found out the object's ability. Private detective "L" (Kenichi Matsuyama) took up his case.

The upcoming film, slated to be released in 2016, will have new characters who are reincarnations of Light and L. Otaku Mode noted that the trailer released flashed words such as "Light Yagami, Rebirth," "L's Successor," "Misa Amane," "Shinigami's Eyes," and "Note's Seal" which pretty much tease what the next movie will be about.

"Death Note 2016" is still a tentative title and information about the cast are yet to be released. The franchise had a spin-off film in 2008 called "L: Change the World." Nippon TV's "Death Note" live action series aired from July to September 2015. There were also animations, novels, games and even a musical version of the franchise, said Variety.
