Google Android 6.0 Marshmallow Release Date: New Leak Shows HTC Devices Will Soon Have The New OS

A new report has surfaced on Tuesday, saying that a number of HTC devices will be receiving Google's latest mobile operating system, the Android 6.0 Marshmallow. The report comes after a list of HTC smartphones has been leaked last Saturday, Sept. 26, via Twitter by a well-known tech informant @LlabToofer, a report from iDigital Times said.

"The leakster did note that updates for some devices would be dependent on whether they have enough internal storage to support the update. Devices like the HTC Desire 816, which contains only 8GB of internal storage, may not be eligible for update," the report said.

Google's Android 6.0 is expected to hit both the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P smartphones today, while old Nexus 5 devices will be able to receive the OS update on Oct. 5. This suggests that smartphones running on old Android OS will have to wait a little bit longer -- a week to a month -- to receive Google's new OS.

"HTC is often among the first manufacturers to announce its intent to update its latest smartphones, and a recent leak suggests this Android launch may be no different. HTC typically promises to begin updating devices within 90 days of receiving the final Android software," the report noted.

Tech Buffalo reports that @LlabTooFer, who was described as a "reliable" source and at the same time has a proven track record related to HTC leaks, has listed some of the company's smartphones that will receive Android 6.0 Marshmallw with Sense 7 user interface. The devices are listed as follows:

  • HTC Desire EYE
  • HTC Desire 816
  • HTC Desire 820
  • HTC Desire 826
  • HTC One M8
  • HTC One M8s
  • HTC One M8 EYE
  • HTC One E8
  • HTC One M9
  • HTC One M9+
  • HTC One ME
  • HTC One E9
  • HTC E9+
  • HTC Butterfly 2
  • HTC Butterfly 3

However, it was stressed that the above-mentioned list is just a "preliminary" list. According to the leaker, HTC will update the list and implement changes along the way, hinting that some of the smartphones that have limited internal storage capacity will be removed from the list.

"Google announced Android M as Android 6.0 Marshmallow in mid-August. The new operating system includes such features as Now On Tap: Which provides contextual details to searches on the device; fingerprint verification; better app permissions and new power efficiency mechanisms like App Standby," iDigital Times said.
