Gigi Hadid addressed her body-shaming haters through a lengthy and emotional post on Instagram on Monday. In the open letter, the 20-year-old model expressed her emotions after she received online backlash from people claiming that she's too curvy for high-profile modeling.
Hadid is from a circle of famous family members. Her mom is a former model and "Real Housewife of Beverly Hills" star, Yolanda Foster, while her father, Mohamed Hadid, is a real estate tycoon. Her stepfather is songwriter and record producer David Foster. She is also the sister of another model, Bella Hadid. With the influence that she has, Hadid's body-shaming haters were swift to accuse her that she just rose to fame because of her popular parents, The Daily Beast reports.
"So many people are so quick to comment negative opinions this month. Yes, judgement on social media comes from people who, 99% of the time, have no idea what they're talking about, but I'm human, and I'm not going to lie, I did let the negativity get to me a little," Hadid wrote. I came to a realisation that when one gets to this point, it's important to rethink why you're doing what you do. What your message is. What you have to say," QZ reports.
Hadid's response to her body-shaming critics came weeks after she graced the Tommy Hilfiger's New York Fashion Week show, where she flaunted her voluptuous body in a skimpy bikini, Daily Mail reports. One basher wrote, "All other models on stage had better bodies than Gigi and her sister" while another claimed that her butt is not a bum of a top model. One critic also said that she must be lying about her age because she has too much cellulites and fat on her lower body.
Hadid started her modeling career with Guess when she was two years old. She's the new face of Maybelline and Tom Ford's fragrance as well as Topshop and H&M. She has also walked on the runway for major events including Chanel and Marc Jacobs. Aside from her long list of achievements, she has been crowned as the "the world's most connected supermodel" by W Magazine.
