The management of Donald Trump's luxury hotel chain has confirmed that seven of its properties were hacked since last year, which exposed debit and credit card details of their customers. The data breach was said to have occurred in May 2014 to June 2015, but cybersecurity expert Brian Krebs warned about the hack in July this year, according to NY Daily News.
NBC News reports that the Trump Hotel Collection has posted on its official website a legal notice stating that customers who used their credit or debit cards from May 19, 2014 to June 2, 2015 may have been affected. The Trump Hotels that were victims of the hack are Trump SoHo New York, Trump National Doral in Miami, Trump International New York, Trump International Chicago, Trump International Waikiki, Trump International Hotel & Tower Las Vegas and Trump International Toronto.
"Although an independent forensic investigation has not conclusively determined that any particular customer's payment card information was taken from the Properties' payment card system or misused, we are providing this notice out of an abundance of caution to inform potentially affected customers of the incident and to call their attention to some steps they may choose to take to help protect themselves," the legal notice reads.
According to the notice, an "unauthorized malware access to payment card information" that was inputted to payment card systems might have been the cause of the breach. However, the statement clarifies that there was no evidence that information was taken from the Trump hotels' systems.
Trump Hotels encourages its customers to check their credit or debit card accounts for fraudulent or suspicious transactions, in line with the incident. It also said that Trump Hotels Collection is offering customers who used a card on the aforementioned dates a one-year complimentary fraud resolution and identity protection services.
The management assures future customers that the said malware has been removed, and they are confident that people can now use their cards safely for payment in any of the Trump Hotels Collection properties.
