Doctor Strange is the latest character whose story will be included in the ever-expanding Marvel universe. In a recent interview with IGN, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige revealed that "Doctor Strange" will the movie will revolve around the history of the character.
"Doctor Strange has one of the best, most classic, most unique origin stories of any hero we have, so why wouldn't we do that?" he said. "How you tell that origin, perhaps there are ways to twist it or play with that, but for the most part, it's a gift when the comics have something with such clarity of story and of character. That doesn't always happen in the comics, and when it does, you use it."
In the comics, Dr. Stephen Strange is a renowned neurosurgeon who loses the use of his hands in a car accident. In search of a cure, he finds himself in Tibet, where he discovers The Ancient One, an extremely powerful sorcerer who lures Dr. Strange in the mystic arts.
Marvel has previously announced that Benedict Cumberbatch will portray Doctor Strange, and The Ancient One will be played by Tilda Swinton. The latest actress to jump on board is Rachel McAdams. In an interview with The Wrap during last month's Toronto Film Festival, the actress did not reveal what role she's playing but hinted that it will be "psychedelic."
While Marvel is keeping her role under wraps, Feige revealed that McAdams role will be "very, very big."
"[She] represents a certain point of view of the worlds that we experience in that movie, but Doctor Strange, without a doubt, is the character we follow through the movie," said Feige.
Production will not commence until November, but as early as now, Marvel fans have been speculating on what McAdams' role could be. CinemaBlend suggested that the actress could play Doctor Strange's love interest as either Clea, his big love, or Victoria Bentley, an apprentice who developed feelings for him. Other possible roles would be Morgana Blessing, who was an author and mystic student in the comics, or she could be one of the mystical entities in the comics called The Vishanti.
"Doctor Strange" is scheduled for a theatrical release in November 2016.
