Michael Fassbender isn't the first pick to play the role of Steve Jobs in the film biography of the business tycoon that founded and shaped Apple Inc.-- he isn't the second either. Sony even went to selling the project to Universal Pictures due to these circumstances.
Leonardo DiCaprio and Christian Bale were first handed the role, only to be declined by both actors. Due to this event, Sony even tended to sell the project to Universal Pictures. The screenwriter, Aaron Sorkin, even suggested Tom Cruise because he felt that Fassbender wasn't famous enough.
"I don't know who Michael Fassbender is, and the rest of the world isn't going to care. This is insane," the writer wrote in an email to Amy Pascal which was posted on the internet after a massive hack on Sony computers. Pascal was the Sony Pictures Entertainment co-chairman back then. However, in a subsequent email, Sorkin exclaimed, ""F--- it. He's a great actor whose time has come."
Cruise, James Franco and Matthew McConaughey were also discussed, according to the e-mails. It was Director Danny Boyle that wanted Fassbender, but faced opposition from Sorkin and Pascal.
For the obvious reasons, it is not surprising that some have made Fassbender a favorite to win an Oscar for best actor. Fassbender received high praises in spite of criticisms due to not looking like Jobs. The former is of German and Irish descent while the latter is Syrian.
"Steve Jobs" premiered on September 5 in Telluride, Colorado film festival. It focused on the introduction of three computers: the Macintosh in 1984, NeXT in 1988 and iMac in 1998. The film then will open in some nine locations in Los Angeles and New York starting October 9 and will expand to wide U.S. release on October 23.
Fassbender was listed first for the best actor award on an awards tracker website, GoldDerby, with DiCaprio coming second. PaddyPower, on the other hand, listed Fassbender second behind DiCaprio.
