"The Good Wife" premiered its seventh season last Sunday, but the real drama might be happening behind the screen. Fans of the show have been speculating that a feud was brewing between co-stars Juliana Margulies and Archie Panjabi, because the two hadn't shared a scene in two years.
In the show, their characters did have a falling out, after Alicia (Margulies) found out that Kalinda (Panjabi) had slept with her husband. In the show's season six finale, Panjabi finally bid the show farewell. According to Entertainment Weekly, the two actresses' final scene was shot separately.
EW asked Panjabi about this edited scene, to which she replied, "I think that's a question you need to ask the producers."
Last Sunday, Margulies finally shot down the rumors when she appeared at the New Yorker Festival.
"It's totally gossip," Margulies told Vulture. "I actually had heard [that rumor] and I feel that it has been talked about and answered. I feel people just like to have gossip or make something into something that isn't there. There's no animosity on my part. It's a shame, because I wonder if it was two men, when one finds out that he fucked his best friend's wife, if it would get that same attention, you know what I mean?"
When asked about the controversial finale split-screen with Panjabi, Margulies said they shot it within the instructions of their director. She said, "It was shot the way Robert wanted to shoot it, and the story line, too."
She also pointed out that at the time of filming, Panjabi was shooting for another show.
"You also have to remember, there's difficulty ... [Panjabi] was also doing another show, called 'The Fall.' I went along with whatever Robert asked me to do and I did it happily," the actress added.
But Panjabi was quick to slam Margulies' explanation. Last Monday, she took to Twitter to debunk her ex-costar, adding fuel to the flame. She tweeted, "'The Fall' was not even in production at that time and I was in New York ready to film the scene!"
Is this a case of life imitating art?
"The Good Wife" airs Sundays on CBS.
