Talk show queen and comedian Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi have opened up the doors to their stylish vacation home for a spread in Elle Décor magazine.
The celebrity couple showed their Santa Monica Mountains home to Elle Décor for its May issue. They bought the 26-acre ranch in 2009 and it's situated just north of Los Angeles, features eight cabins and two large barns. Originally, it was the estate of actor William Powell, before becoming a monastery and then a rehab center.
The couple worked with decorator Jay Holman and designer Cliff Fong, mixing 20th century designs with industrial pieces.
"I thought it might take Ellen five years to finish the project," de Rossi, 40, tells the magazine, on newsstands April 16. "She did it in one. It was shocking!"
"When we bought the place, it was a professional horse facility," says DeGeneres, 55. "But it was really not taken care of."
The ranch has two large barns at the center, as well as eight cabins, each of which DeGeneres, 55, working with decorator Jay Holman and designer Cliff Fong, designed to be unique. The property mixes 20th-century designs by Jean Prouvé and Arne Jacobsen with industrial furnishings, old portraits and fencing masks.
The talk-show host has even brought a touch of domesticity to the stables. "There are times I'll come to the barn and see a beautiful piece of early American furniture where my horses get groomed," says de Rossi, 40. "I have to explain to Ellen that I need to fit a horse in there."
