Papillon Organic Roquefort cheese is being recalled nationwide by Whole Foods due to possibility of Listeria monocytogenes bacterium contamination.
According to huffingtonpost.com, Food and Drug Administration has found listeria in whole, uncut cheese wheels and fortunately, none has been reported infected by listeria and no one has been reporting to the French company yet. Whole Foods usually sells Roquefort cheeses by wedges wrapped in individual packaging.
Consumers are advised that if their Roquefort cheese from Whole Foods has a scale sticker that begins with "PLU 029536", they should throw out the cheese or bring the receipt on the nearest Whole Foods store for a full refund.
Listeria infection can cause listeriosis which can be fatal to elderly, small children, pregnant women and people infected with HIV or cancer who have weak immune system. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said that Listeriosis' symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, muscle aches, nausea, fever and stiff neck. Symptoms can be felt few days or for as long as two months after consuming the contaminated food. It can cause hospitalization and may last for weeks. The bacteria's can survive from three days up to seventy days.
According to foxnews.com, consumers who are able to buy the possible infected cheeses are also advised to wash their refrigerators with hot and soapy water if the cheese was stored in it. Listeria can live and grow in cold temperatures which makes cleaning your refrigerator necessary.
Roquefort cheeses are removed from Whole Foods' shelves after Food and Drug Administration conduct a routine inspection on their products and found the listeria in uncut chesses. The agency also inspected other remaining stock of Roquefort cheeses to ensure that all of contaminated cheeses will not be able to reach other consumers and to prevent the possible infection of listeria which can cause Listeriosis.
