Building a House with Rubik’s Cubes

In these times of heightened technology, architecture is keeping pace too. Building a home with bricks has become obsolete. Now buildings are made of steel, glass and even shipping containers.

But, ever imagined building a house with the famous mind boggling puzzle game, the Rubik's Cube?

The folks at Movoto Real Estate (who apparently love all kinds of blocks) put on their creative thinking caps and decided to find out how many Rubik's Cubes would be required to build an average-sized 2,169 square foot, double story home and how much time would it take to solve those cubes and put them in place.

According to the Movoto Novelty Blog, building a home with the aforementioned stats would require 458,251 cubes. How did they arrive at it?

Apparently, they first figured out the kind of cube they would use and the size of it. They decided to go for a standard 3x3x3 original Rubik's Cube which is around 2.25 inches thick on each side. After much analysis, they concluded that they would require four cubes to build nine inch thick walls. The 458,251 cubes were arrived upon, after leaving out space for two windows and a door.

But as the cubes are puzzles, they need to be solved. To determine the time it would take to solve each cube and place them back in order, they consulted the Guinness Book of Records and found out the fastest Speedcuber. A speedcuber is a Rubik Cube solver. The average time taken by a proficient speedcuber is around one minute. However, the world record for solving a cube is just 5.55 seconds, held by a Netherlands' native, Mats Valk.

Solving all the 458,251 cubes at the pace of 5.55 seconds (without any breaks) would take around 29 days, four hours, five minutes, and 25 seconds!

The Rubik's Cube was invented by Hungary based architect, Ernõ Rubik, who actually invented it for his students to explain 3D concepts. However, it grew to become one of the most popular puzzle games of the world. The Rubik's Cube has evolved over the years. Check out some amazing designs of the cube here.

More recently, a Toronto-based art studio had set the world record for making the world's largest Rubik Cube mosaic using 85,794 cubes in Macau, China.
