‘Supergirl’ Pilot Episode Review: Full Of Action, Humor, and Joy Despite Some Flaws

"Supergirl" pilot episode will hit the small screen on Oct. 26, but critics have already reviewed the upcoming action-adventure drama TV series. The new show gives a promise as the pilot episode showcases a plot full of action and humor, despite some flaws.

It is noted that CBS' "Supergirl" gives a feeling of joy to its viewer. As Forbes puts it, it is as good as "The Flash" TV series. The report notes it is not hard to spot the similarities of "The Flash" and "Supergirl" since both are being produced by EP-extraordinaire Greg Berlanti. That similar sense of joy is only present in these two TV series which other DC Comics projects do not have.

As a standalone TV series, "Supergirl" has the right blend of fun and melodrama at the right time.

The trailers of "Supergirl" characterize Kara Zor-el, the cousin of Kal-El, as a child-like young woman. However, her personality is "far from what she actually presents as in the final product. When star Melissa Benoist is taking on the pilot episode's evil alien enemy, it's done so with a real sense of drama." Obviously, only Berlanti can do this magic and can give his share of audience a "delicious smoothie full of the sweet fruit based sugars of up-beat humor and the nutritious greens of dramatic intrigue."

Hollywood Reporter on the other hand recalls how some are skeptic about the upcoming TV series of CBS. According to the report, the awful promotional reel of "Supergirl" gives wrong signal to those who love the heroine in the DC Comics.

But obviously, it's a pleasant surprise that "Supergirl" delivers. The show doesn't downplay its message, "but rather delivers it with an enthusiastic bluntness that harkens back to its comic roots."

Of course, there are very minimal flaws observed in the pilot episode of "Supergirl." For example, Comic Book Resources says that the intense rush to set-up the background of Kara made the first episode like a "full-length movie crammed in 40-minute recap." Another thing that is noted is the "montage of Supergirl fighting crime/figuring out her costume is so fast it feels like it was cut for a teaser." It appears like the minute you arrive to the purpose of the series, you already feel like you've been dazed by too much exposition, just for the sake of setting up the premise of the story.

On the whole, "Supergirl" first episode is quite fun. The main cast Melissa Benoist is very convincing of her role as Kara.
