"Supergirl" executive producer Andrew Kreisberg recently explained why they decided to not include Superman in the upcoming series.
In an interview with HitFix, co-executive producer Sarah Shechter also debunked rumors that there's Supergirl because Superman wasn't available for his own standalone series.
"I think that Supergirl is such an interesting character and is so under-explored that the opportunity there was so enormous. And I think the reason why Superman's not in the show is because it's not about him," she said.
Shechter also reminded critics that there's really no reason why Superman should be part of the series because it's about Supergirl alone.
"And it's her show and it's about her and he is just sort of a shadow in the back of her psyche, and I think that's the right way to portray him because that's how she experiences it," she said.
Meanwhile, Kreisberg added that even though Superman won't be part of the series, the reason for such will be tackled in one of the upcoming episodes of "Supergirl" Season 1.
"It's actually one of the big storylines of the third episode about what Superman means in this world, what he means to Kara (Melissa Benoist) and what people's view of him is in relation to her," he said.
At one point during the series, Kara will tell another character that she doesn't want to be Superman's cousin. Rather, she wants Superman to be known as her cousin.
"And it's really the episode where the city starts to turn towards supporting her in a way that they previously hadn't," Kreisberg said.
In other news, TV Line recently reported that a body double for Superman has been cast to join "Supergirl." However, it's still unclear how and when the character will be included in the show.
