‘Gotham’ Season 2 Episode 5 Recap: ‘Rise of the Villains: Scarification’

"Gotham" episode five of season two reveals the family history of Theo Galavan. A new character "Firefly" is introduced as Penguin tries to save his mother.

In the fifth installment of "Gotham" season two, Galavan was all too eager to wreak havoc on the city and he sends Penguin to burn down important buildings. According to TV Line, Penguin decided to have this task outsourced to the Pike Brothers. They were hesitant to accept the job but after Selina told them Penguin is good, they agreed to take the arson job. However, before the brothers can pull off the assignment, Captain Barnes and his Strike Force raided an illegal armory where one of the Pikes was arrested. This is where the new character "Firefly" comes in as the brothers enlisted the help of Bridgit who already has experience in burning stuff.

Penguin then went on to seek advice from an antique shop owner named Edwige about the purloined blade and why it's so important. Edwige then shared to him about Gotham's history and a rivalry of clans that lasted two centuries. Celestine Wayne was caught having an affair with a member of the rival family Caleb Dumas. Celestine, to protect herself, lied and told her brothers that she was being assaulted to which they responded with violence. The Wayne family then tried to purge the Dumas name from the city but after years of exile the Dumas clan became Galavan.

Meanwhile, in a post by Entertainment Weekly, Penguin is no longer as powerful and has lost his control over Gotham. Theo has kidnapped his mother and is using this to force him to follow Theo's orders. He tries to befriend the Galavan siblings but he gets rebuffed. Theo tells him he is just a "tool" to do his bidding. Penguin gives him a chest containing the eyeball of Wayne Enterprises employee Sid Bunderslaw which will play a big role in Theo's vengeance against Gotham and the Waynes.
