Celebrity Homes for Sale: American Lyricist Ira Gershwin's Penthouse is Available for $6M

The penthouse of the award-winning American lyricist Ira Gershwin at 33 Riverside Drive, New York City was where great parties once took place and all the important and significant people in music and theater gathered.

That same penthouse is now on the market with a heavy price tag of $6 million. The 2,000-square-foot unit comes with 1,000 square feet of outdoor space that features high-end landscaping.

NY Curbed reports that Douglas Elliman, the largest residential real estate brokerage in the New York metropolitan area, is handling the sale.

The penthouse features a large living room, a formal dining room and a wraparound terrace. The terrace is highlited as the unit's most impressive feature as it offers scenic views of New York City and the Hudson River.

According to the NY Post, the Gershwin Penthouse also has its own elevator landing and a windowed eat-in chef's kitchen that comes with an advanced system for water filtration.

Additional house features include a guestroom with its own bathroom and a washer-dryer unit.

An interesting fact about the property is that the adjoining penthouse was once owned by Ira's brother George, who also happened to be a musical genius. Both men called 33 Riverside their home from 1929 to 1933.

Together, the Gershwins formed one of the best songwriting tandems in the history of music. The duo composed some of the most memorable Broadway theater works that include "I Got Rhythm," "Embraceable You," "The Man I Love" and "Someone to Watch Over Me." Over the years, the brothers collaborated on over 20 songs and musicals.

The brothers reportedly regularly threw bashes in their residences, often attracting young women who were looking for a shot at a Broadway audition. While the parties were the talk of the town, the famed penthouses of the Gershwin brothers were equally popular.

Ethel Merman, a regular guest of the celebrated brothers, once said that attending the bashes the Gershwins hosted gave visitors a chance to see the houses and even have a shot at becoming a part of a Broadway show.
