‘Ahmed Mohamed’: The ‘Clock Kid’ Who Got Arrested for Making a Clock is Moving to Qatar

Ahmed Mohamed and his family announced on Tuesday that they will soon move to Doha, Qatar. This is after they accepted the offer of Qatari Foundation to pay Mohamed's high school and undergraduate education.

Although receiving many generous educational offers from various schools, Mohamed settled for the Qatari Foundation because of its tagline and culture of "empowering young people and fostering a culture of innovation and creativity."

Ahmed Mohamed was a high school student in Irving, Texas who was arrested because he brought a homemade clock to school to impress his teachers. Apparently, the teacher wasn't impressed and called the local police because he thought it looked like a bomb. He was released later that day but he was able to capture the attention of international media and the Hashtag #IStandWithAhmed brought the social media by storm. His story moved a lot of people due to the unfair treatment he received just because he is Muslim and black.

Thereafter, he received invitations to Google and White House where he met Google co-founder, Sergey Brin and United States of America President, Barack Obama, respectively. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg invited him to Facebook headquarters, too, and posted about the incident on his account.

After his White House visit, Mohamed has made the decision to fly and move all the way to Qatar.

"I loved the city of Doha because it's so modern. I saw so many amazing schools there, many of them the campuses of famous American universities." Mohamed said in the family's statement.

Qatar is known for its Education City that houses satellite campuses of prestigious American schools such as Georgetown University, Northwestern University, Carnegie Mellon University, Virginia Commonwealth University and Texas A&M University.

However, before he flies to Qatar and start a new life, Mohamed is still set to pick up his clock from the Irving Police Department.

Is Ahmed Mohamed's decision to start anew in Qatar a bright one? Or are schools in the United States more preferable?
