‘Call of Duty: Black Ops 3’ Gameplay: Dev Says It Is Targeting 30FPS Frame Rate For Xbox 360 And PS3

On Thursday, Beenox and Mercenary Technology revealed that they are targeting 30 fps frame rate for "Call of Duty: Black Ops 3" on both PS3 and Xbox 360. It is common knowledge that the popular game franchise has 60 fps frame rate in most of its titles.

In fact, the developer's previous releases such as "Advanced Warfare" and "Ghost" are roughly under the aforementioned frame rate on some last-generation consoles, a report from Gamespot said.

Beenox creative director Thomas Wilson told Develop that the gaming studio attempted to hit a 60 fps frame rate. However, hitting such target proved to be "challenging."

"I'd say that we tried to hit that target [60fps].  It becomes harder when you're working on current gen platforms. We're basically looking more at something like 30fps. But still, the experience is very enjoyable, otherwise it's not Call of Duty," he said, as quoted in the report.

Wilsom claims that targeting 60 fps for multiple consoles "becomes harder" as development progresses. However, he stressed that achieving the desired frame rate for the "Call of Duty: Black Ops 3" is essential.

"We think 60 frames is super essential. Any time you have any kind of input latency at all, players can feel that. I'm pretty convinced Call of Duty is as popular as it is because of how fluid it can feel. You can feel the difference, and we go to a lot of trouble to try to keep the game running at 60 frames all the time," Wilson said, explaining the importance of having the desired frame rate for the game.

"It's not just frame rate that takes a hit this year for the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of Black Ops III. As announced previously, the last-generation editions also do not feature the game's four-player campaign mode. However, players can still expect multiplayer and zombies," Gamespot  has noted.
