‘Youtube’ News: The Video-Streaming Giant Makes an Offer to Creators that They Can’t Refuse

Youtube has just unveiled Youtube Red, a paid subscription service that will make the online lives of the top video creators better like never before.

The video-streaming company, under Google, has just recently offered its top video creators in the likes of PewDiePie to sign its revenue share deal for the new YouTube Red $9.99 ad-free subscription. Otherwise, the company will have their videos hidden from public view on both the ad-supported and ad-free tiers. Your sought-after comedians, musicians, game commentators, and DIY instructors will be part of Youtube Red signed talents, with the exception of an average person that uploads clips.

This may seem like a harsh move on Youtube's end. However, with fans turning into paid subscribers, creators will have more chances of gaining from their videos.

Chief Business Officer Robert Kyncl said that 99% of content on Youtube will still be available and noted that majority of the creators agreed and signed the deal. He also added that Youtube will pay out "the vast, vast majority of revenue" to creators. In the recent Youtube Partner Program Terms, the creators are paid 55% of revenue which is relatively lower than Spotify with 70% and Apple Music with 71.5%.

Moreover, the revenue sharing would also look at the watch time so that creators with longer videos will be benefitting more than those with shorter ones.

Techcrunch posted, "Google says the goal is to offer consistency, so people thinking about subscribing to Red don't have to worry about their favorite content not being available in the ad-free service. But there's no explanation why it couldn't just flag videos of those who don't sign the deal as "Not On Red", and instead had to go with a sign-or-disappear strategy."

Google has been receiving a lot of criticisms as to how it uses its reach inappropriately. And with the coercion over Youtube partners, there is a doubt as to how the company will be able to work smoothly with them in the future.
