In a rare Fox television moment, the worlds of "Bones" and "Sleepy Hollow" will collide in a one-night only crossover special, happening on Thursday, Oct. 29.
The shows' official teaser poster reads, "Two genius teams. One killer crossover." As reported by Movie Web, the two-hour Halloween special will begin with "Bones," where Dr. Brennan (Emily Deschanel) and Agent Booth (David Boreanaz) will discover a "grisly" pile of human remains. As the duo hunts for clues, they will encounter "Sleepy Hollow's" Icahabod Crane (Tom Mison) and Abbie Mills (Nicole Beharie) who are on the same case. The foursome will team up to solve the mystery, and in the process, will "thrill the living, the dead, and everything in between."
The story will continue in "Sleepy Hollow's" timeslot, where Ichabod and Abbie will need Brennan and Booth's advanced forensic expertise to stop an ancient nemesis.
"Sleepy Hollow" producer Clifton Campbell talked to Variety to discuss this exciting team-up. Despite the two shows having different genres--"Bones" being a realistic crime investigation show while "Sleepy Hollow" deals with supernatural forces--Campbell said the match-up makes sense.
"Pairing them up together is something that I think our fans and their fans will enjoy seeing as they process the same case together. At a certain point midway, when we pass off from their episode to our episode, the supernatural really kicks in and it's like looking at two sides of the same coin," the producer said. "It requires a reunion of this brand new coupling to take us to the conclusion that we need on our side, and it reveals a lot about both characters."
Campbell also pointed out that it will be fun to watch the dynamics of Booth and Abbie's team-up, as both are fellow FBI agents at the opposite points of their careers. Booth is a veteran in the agency while Abbie is at the beginning of her career.
"There's a real pass-off there, a real mentorship that, without any effort at all, Booth is able to help Abbie on her quest to try and have it all in a world that's very difficult to begin with. He doesn't know exactly what's going on or why they're poking around at this thing that doesn't make sense to him at all, but he understands that that's the nature of being an investigator," Campbell shared.
When asked if fans can expect more crossovers in the future, the producer hinted at the possibility. "There's always that wink to the audience that you never know, something like this could happen again. Now that we've established a framework for the compatibility, it's fun to wonder if something like that might make sense another time," he said.
The sharp contrast between the scientific and the mythic is something fans wouldn't want to miss. The specials will begin with "Bones" on Thursday, 8 p.m., and continue with "Sleepy Hollow" at 9 p.m. on Fox.
