The initiative of the Denver Homeless Out Loud to build houses for the homeless in the Sustainability Park was put in the dump after some of their members were arrested and the 'tiny' homes that their loving hands had built were torn down and carted by the police.
"Denver Public Works destroyed, threw into dump trucks, and carted away the homes that had been so badly needed by houseless people and so lovingly constructed by those who would have lived there and their supporters," said the activist.
The arrest was made after a complaint was filed by the Denver Housing Authority, saying that the group of activists building 'free' houses for the homeless wouldn't leave 'their' property.
In a press release given by the Denver Homeless Out Loud, the activist explained why their group chose the location to be the site of the 'village' that they are building.
"In explaining why they had chosen this site on which to establish the village, the group recounted how the Denver Housing Authority, which owns the property, has torn down hundreds of low income housing units, and after allowing the Urban Farming Cooperative to use the land for a few years, has agreed this year to sell the land to a private developer, who will build multi-family housing that will support gentrification in Curtis Park, but be far beyond the reach of those for whom the Denver Housing Authority is supposed to exist," the group wrote on their press release.
ABC 7 News Denver reported that the police gave several warnings and orders to the group to disperse them before making the arrest.
A total of ten members from the Denver Homeless Out Loud were arrested for trespassing.
The arrest of some of their members and the wreckage done to the tiny homes during the arrest did not hinder the spirit of the Denver Homeless Out Loud. "We will not give up! We will keep fighting to defend people's right to housing. For the sake of the future residents of Resurrection Village and those who were arrested, we must all stand together now!" the group stated in their press release.
