‘Supergirl’ Pilot Episode Recap: ‘Pilot’

"Supergirl" is finally here and the first episode is aptly called "Pilot."

The first episode of "Supergirl," as quite expected, is a series of expositions about the heroine's background and laying down the foundations for future episodes as well as for character development. According to Entertainment Weekly, actress Meliss Benoist plays the lead role of Kara Zor-El who is the cousin of Superman. In Krypton, she is older than Kal-El and when things start heading south in their home planet, she was tasked to accompany the young would-be Superman to Earth and be his guardian.

But as anyone who knows the life of Superman, things did not go according to that storyline and "Pilot" explained that Kara's ship was knocked into the Phantom Zone where time and space don't move. She stays there for 23 years before finally making it to Earth where Kal-El is already Superman. Kara is still 13 and Kal-El or Clark Kent asked the Danver family to adopt her. The Danvers are a scientist couple who helped Superman understand what his powers are. They have another daughter by the name of Alex.

Kara explains in a voice over that despite the fact that she has the same powers as her now older cousin, she decided the best course of action to follow was to keep her identity in the dark as she believes the Earth does not need another superhero.

In a post by USA Today, a superhero series like "Supergirl" will not be complete without introducing a villain or a storyline that will find the protagonist engaging different enemies every episode. For this one, Kara is taken by the Department of Extranormal Affairs through the help of her sister Alex. They blame Kara for attracting the attention of aliens to Earth citing a spacecraft full of intergalactic criminals landing the same time as she arrived. She fights them off although she has not mastered the full potential of her powers.
