'Monopoly' Movie News: Popular Boardgame Will Have an 'Origins' Movie

A "Monopoly" origins movie is currently underway produced by the Big Beach Films but the board game manufacturer, Hasbro, has nothing to do with it.

According to variety.com, the movie will be based on a book by Mary Pilon entitled "The Monopolists: Obsession, Fury and the Scandal Behind the World's Favorite Board Game" and produced by Marc Turtletaub, Peter Saraf and Diane Nabatoff.

Mary Pilon's book talked about the origin of the game way back in 1904 when Elizabeth J. Maggie Phillips, an anti- monopolist, created a "The Landlord's Game" to show the negative effects if land are concentrated and ran by private monopolies. It was later in 1935 that Parker Brothers sold a variation called "Monopoly" which based the game in the streets of Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Movie producers will also base the film on Ralph Anspach's book "The Billion Dollar Monopoly Swindle." His book tells the story of how he invented the "Anti- Monopoly" game. Also, Howard A. Rodman president of Writers Guild of America, is the one who will write the script for the film.

Big Beach's efforts to produce the film is not the first attempt as the game's manufacturer Hasbro has been teaming up with Lionsgate to produce their own "Monopoly" team since 2009 with Andrew Niccol as their writer.

In a report by theguardian.com, since the film will focus on the books made by anti- monopoly people, Hasbro might get a "black eye" if the movie pushes through.

Big Beach's own "Monopoly" film is believed to be released during a time when these kind of films can't promise success. A movie about the origins of McDonald's entitled "The Founder" is also currently on the works in which Michael Keaton will play the role of Machiavellian fast food chain founder Ray Kroc. The film is expected to be released in 2017 in time for the award seasons of the year and expected to get something. However, the recent Steve Jobs film was not able to make any remarkable record in the box office.
