Tips on How to Distress your Furniture

Are you into antiques? It is completely priceless to see a furniture that looks like it has been brought down from generations to generations. But if you're opting to buy one, it may cause you a ton so to capture that distressed, tainted look...HGTV shared a way for us to achieve that look for our furniture.

Aside from this, we also skim down some techniques on how to further achieve the distressed look from sanding, milk painting, dry brushing...etc. Here are some ways to do it to make that distressed look possible for your furniture.

How to Distress your Furniture (HGTV):

  1. Figure out the end look you would like to achieve for your furniture.

  2. Decide if you want to add a stain afterwards or just a clear color.

  3. Start sanding the furniture slightly then wipe the furniture afterwards.

  4. Apply your base coat then once dry, try to sand off the areas of the entire furniture. HGTV advises to sand off areas particularly where the hands are always holding the furniture. And rub candle wax to secure the spots where you want to show off the color of your furniture.

  5. Paint the choice top coat color then the finish afterwards.

Other techniques you may want to use and learn to achieve the distress look.

Milk Paint- This is one of the most popular used in distressing furniture. Milk Paint technique is simple to do and makes quite a great after-look effect for your furniture. Once your furniture is painted with milk paint, you can use scotch tape or even a scraper to take off some of the paint. (Source: paintedfurnitureideas)

Dry Brush Technique - One of the easiest ways to distress your furniture. Using an old dry brush, just lightly dip this in your choice paint color then paint this on your furniture. Don't forget to have some paper towels ready for the paint drips on your furniture. (Source: andreadekker)

Steel Wool Technique- When you use this technique, this somehow gives off a look that your furniture's paint chips off. You would be needing to put on a base and top coat on this. Once dried, try to gently rub the steel wool over the spots you want your furniture to look distressed. (Source: andreadekker)
