"NCIS" sixth episode of season 13 is called "Viral" and the team find themselves solving a case of a petty officer shot in public. All evidence points to the work of a serial killer but apparently Gibbs and his team are dealing with a copycat.
"Viral" begins with Petty Officer Second Class Adam Meyers having a great time in a park on Halloween. According to Celeb Dirty Laundry, the park where Meyers is seen watching children do their trick or treating is brimming with kids plus their parents. Without warning, a gunshot rings out and Meyers falls dead. Everyone dives down for safety, with mothers and fathers instinctively protecting their children; this means no one saw who shot Meyers or where the bullet came from.
"NCIS" is called to investigate and they find a calling card which is the signature of the serial killer who shoots people randomly. The "Tri-State Sniper," as he is called, already has six people listed as his victims and it looks like Meyers is number seven. This looks like an easy case to crack until the team receives a call telling them that somebody confessed to being the sniper killer at the same time that Meyers was shot. The team is now dealing with a copycat or someone who wants to frame a murder on the serial killer.
Meanwhile, according to Entertainment Weekly, McGee breaks down the news to Meyers' sister who is deeply devastated. It is then revealed that Meyers has an unpleasant past in the Navy. He confessed to taking secret photos of two female officers and shared them on the Internet. The team tracks down the women in the photos; one committed suicide just 10 days before Meyers gets shot and the other denies involvement but is relieved that Meyers finally got what he deserves.
But in true "NCIS" fashion, nothing is clear cut so the team digs deeper. Abby traces the camera to Peter Woodruff, the officer to whom Meyers "confessed" taking the photos. Apparently, Meyers' sister was involved in a drug case and to help her pay her legal fees, the Petty Officer made a deal with Woodruff.
