Tennessee Real Estate News: U.S. Veterans Join Hands to Build Homes for Those in Need

Retired Army Lt. Gen. Keith Huber, along with 70 other United States Veterans, found ways to serve their countrymen even after retirement.

The veterans that came from all five branches of the military, willingly joined together to help build homes for three families in need in Antioch through Habitat for Humanity.

Huber, who retired from the Army in 2013, said that building homes for those in need gave veterans a chance to continue their service after leaving active duty.

"The transition out of uniform is really hard. And it's really hard because we search for communities and groups that we can share unconditional trust with, that we're willing to sacrifice and suffer with...and do exactly what we're doing here," said Huber. "I don't have a clue how to build a house...we can train each other to do anything. And we work as teams, and we support each other. That is the power of our service, and now we want to continue to give back."

In a report by The Tennessean, Marjorie Eastman said that, "It is important for the community to remember veterans [who] want to continue to serve their communities any way that they can." This is especially now that Veterans Day is approaching.

Marjorie Eastman is the platoon leader for the Nashville chapter of the veteran service organization, 'The Mission Continues.'

"Let's show in our month, how we don't want on Nov. 11 the discount at Applebee's. We want to show folks that this is what we're about," said Eastman, paraphrasing a comment from a retired U.S. Marine. "We don't want a hand, we want to give a hand. This is our legacy, we're a legacy of service."

Members of the three families who will receive the homes being built by the veterans and Habitat for Humanity also participated in the construction of the houses.

The homes are estimated to be fully built by Nov. 15.
