Two Civilians, One Official Injured in Boston Public Housing Fire

Two people were injured after a fire broke out in a public housing complex for elderly and disabled people in South Boston.

According to bostonglobe.com, Boston Fire Department spokesman Stephen MacDonald said the fire happened in an apartment on the fourth floor of the complex at around 4:55 PM at 120 L. Street.

Fortunately, both victims are in stable condition and will be back on their feet after a few treatments. A fireman injured during the incident will also be fine after the cut in his hand got treated.

The fire was already out by Sunday evening and officials believed that it was caused by smoking material that was disposed carelessly.

In a report by myfoxboston.com, the extent of the residents' injuries are still unknown but medical professionals who attended to them assured that they will not be having any long- term injuries from the fire incident.

Fire officials said the damage caused by the fire is estimated to worth around $50, 000 and the building is part of Boston Housing Authority development project. The authority said that they will assist residents who may be displaced due to the fire to find a place to stay while reconstructions are under way.

Officials have also warned others that home fire safety practices are important in preventing fires as well as loss of properties and lives of their loved ones. The city is also conducting home inspections to check that each home and housing complex is adhering to the city's policies in fire safety.

Authorities are usually looking for fire detectors, sprinklers as well as fire exits installed especially in home buildings for the tenants to use in case a fire broke out. Landlords and buildings that fail to comply on the city's fire safety policies will be given notice to fix their facilities and fine if they are still not able to comply with the requirements after the grace period has been awarded.
