Amazon, the world's largest online retailer is expanding its office space in downtown Vancouver, Canada. It has reportedly agreed to lease 91,000 square feet of office space in the TELUS Garden project, according to several news reports.
Colliers International confirmed to Curbed that Amazon will be leasing the office space and could also end up taking about 156,000 square feet of space. The online retailers' expansion in the city is expected to create 1000 new jobs.
"The technology jobs include roughly 70 software development engineers, a dozen program and product managers, and a handful of other highly skilled positions. The company's Vancouver office is slated to develop tools and applications for Amazon engineers," reports The Vancouver Sun.
Gregor Robertson, the mayor of Vancouver shared the news with his followers on twitter on Monday.
Meanwhile, Amazon is expanding within the United States also. It recently revealed renderings of its proposed Seattle headquarters and was also looking for office space in New York City.
More recently, it announced that it will be opening a 1000 million square feet distribution center in the former General Motors plant in Baltimore, reports The Baltimore Sun.
Amazon has its hands full. It introduces new ventures almost every day. It recently introduced a payment mechanism like PayPal and also updated its tablet line. It is also putting up mini warehouses inside suppliers like P&G for faster shipping. But, despite the branching out and diversification, the company has been stagnant on the profuit front, reports The New York Times.
However, in a recent rating by Fortune Magazine, Amazon.com, Google and Apple were rated the "most admired" companies of the world. In its 2012 rating, Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon, was named "Businessperson of the year".
