Star Trek fans, or shall you be called Trekkers (Trekkies?), rejoice! A new series is coming its way to our screens in 2017.
According to TV Line, the announcement was made on Monday. It said that Alex Kurtzman, one of the producers of the current Star Trek film franchise (as well as a TV uber-producer), is producing the next 'small-screen iteration', which will be launched in January 2017 on CBS, prior to the premiere of all of the succeeding episodes on the network's live streaming service, CBS All Access.
According to CBS Television Studios, "The brand-new Star Trek will introduce new characters seeking imaginative new worlds and new civilizations, while exploring the dramatic contemporary themes that have been a signature of the franchise since its inception in 1966."
"There is no better time to give Star Trek fans a new series than on the heels of the original show's 50th anniversary celebration. Everyone here has great respect for this storied franchise, and we're excited to launch its next television chapter in the creative mind and skilled hands of Alex Kurtzman, someone who knows this world and its audience intimately," CBS Television Studios president David Stapf said in a statement.
Star Trek is an American science fiction entertainment franchise created by Gene Roddenberry. It is owned by CBS and Paramount Pictures. The first series, which is now referred to as The Original Series, debuted in 1966 and ran for three seasons on NBC.
Moreover, Star Trek has also been acclaimed for its influence to the world. In fact, it has been named as the source of idea for several advanced technological inventions such as the cell phone.
