Sony has officially confirmed that there will be no backwards compatibility for PlayStation 4. The news comes after Sony World Wide Studios head Shuhei Yoshida responded to a query by a fan via Twitter. The fan asked Yoshida if PS3 titles will be playable on PS4 via backwards compatibility. In response, Yushida categorically said "no," a report from Techno Buffalo said.
In a Eurogamer interview, Jim Ryan, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe's President and CEO, said that "backwards compatibility is a feature that's not used that much."
"It was very interesting to look at that montage of the various Tekkens, and seeing how those things have evolved over the years. The first one, which I loved, looks prehistoric. The next generation comes along, and people just jump at it," Ryan told Eurogamer during the sidelines of the Paris Games Week, as quoted by Yahoo. "It gets talked about, and it's always high on the list of what people want, but it's not a feature that gets used that much. Our focus is on the new games," he said.
For his part, Sony Computer Entertainment World Wide Studios Shuhei Yoshida said in a Polygon interviews: "I don't think we will change our approach. The PlayStation 4 doesn't have backward compatibility."
"PlayStation Now works surprisingly well. But the primary purpose of that project was to create a new network service that could be used to bring PlayStation games to multiple devices including non-PlayStation devices, like Sony and Samsung televisions," Yoshida said.
"Backwards compatibility has become one of the most used terms in gaming industry since Microsoft announced Xbox One would soon support a lot of Xbox 360 titles already owned by gamers. Microsoft actually thinks this is going to push Xbox One's sales. Sony, on the other hand, doesn't think this is something worthy of such investments, just because people want to play new games, not old and already owned glories," Gamepur said.
