Eminem’s Childhood Home Used on ‘Marshall Mathers LP’ Cover Catches Fire

The Detroit home of 'Slim Shady' hitmaker, Eminem, which was used on the cover of his latest album 'Marshall Mathers LP 2,' caught fire at 6.20 pm, Thursday, according to several news reports.

The fire department successfully put-out the blaze that started on the second floor of the residence. However, they still haven't been able to figure out the cause of the flames, reports New York Daily News.

The fire has caused considerable damage. The insides are charred and the ceiling between the first and the second floor has also burnt away. Exteriors of the home are now soot-stained, reports The Detroit Free Press.

Matt Toporek, a resident of Harper Woods and a huge Eminem fan revealed to the publication that he had been to the home Monday and found the front door open. However, the insides were perfectly fine.

But after the fire, Toporek was very disappointed.

"Just went inside and everything was burnt down; two days ago, it was fine - depressing," Toporek said. "I don't know who does this, but this is a Detroit legend. Depressing," he said to the Detroit Free Press.

Apparently, the neighbourhood in which Eminem's childhood home is located is not doing very well either. Several other parcels are being auctioned off by the Michigan Land Bank - which operates by selling off delinquent properties.

Eminem's childhood home was also being auctioned off with bids starting at $1. However, the bank still owns the home. According to USA Today, public records reveal that the home is a 767 square feet residence that Eminem's mother, Deborah Mathers, purchased in 1997 for about $19,900. The property reportedly traded ownership ten times before the 'Wayne County Treasurer's Office' foreclosed on the home in 2001 for non-payment of taxes. Zillow estimates the home's worth to be something around $32,675.

This particular home was also used on the cover of the album's prequel, 'Marshall Mathers LP'. His first single from MMLP 2, "Berzerk" has already attained Platinum status after selling more than 1 million copies. The album, however, garnered mixed reviews.

Eminem recently won the 'Artist of the Year' award at the first YouTube Music Awards, reports International Business Times.
