Sometimes, crazy can make sense, and that's especially true when it comes to designing your living room.
Instead of falling right into the cookie cutter, take the risk and throw those design rules out of the window. Here is a break-the-rules guide to living room design according to Apartment Therapy:
Rule: You need a coffee table.
Not really. If you think that the landing strip and the countertops are not enough to house all your stuff, it's okay to get one. But it is also okay not to, especially if you would rather have that wide and open space for your everyday Zumba sessions.
Rule: A rug is a must.
Says who? If you have that gorgeous hardwood, why cover it up with some furry patches? While it's nice to have some soft and fluffy spots to walk your feet on, you won't lose sleep if you can't.
Rule: Never go oversized in a small space.
How a huge painting is perfect for a tiny space makes sense is a mystery, but it's true and you should try it! Sometimes, trying to fit several small pieces in a tiny space will just look messy and unfocused. Going for something big and bold can actually pull the entire room together and ground the décor. It's just about finding that perfect piece of giant.
Rule: Cleaning and polishing will improve everything.
Perfectly imperfect, the song goes. While it's nice to have some shiny and sterile spots in a home, it can also up the style to have some textured, weathered, imperfect pieces to achieve that cool, rustic vibe in the living room.
Rule: Your metals have to much.
Nope, definitely not. There are several types of metals that can be incorporated in your design so why just stick to one? You have stainless, copper, brass, gold, silver, bronze; you have fine, textured, treated, or unpolished. Metal is a nice material to work with to achieve that eclectic design without looking over-the-top; just make sure to choose the right pieces and the right combination of metals.
