Tech rumors are full of twists and turns. And in a semi interesting turn of events, the "Samsung Galaxy S7" may actually not join the megapixel craze and just get itself equipped with a 12 MP rear camera. The catch is that the sensor size of the camera will be a larger-than-standard (at least in smartphones) 1/2".
Previous rumors mentioned a lot of good things about the "Samsung Galaxy S7", including its association with Sony's custom 23-24 8 MP imager used in the Z5 line, alongside Samsung's possible use of a 20 MP ISOCELL sensor. If these rumors are anywhere near the truth, this would mean that Samsung will now put in their focus on low light shots, thanks to the technology called the 'dual photodiode'.
And on a related note, the new Google smartphones "Nexus 5X" and "Nexus 6P" both use the IMX377 sensor by Sony which has 1/2.3" diagonal size and 1.55 micron pixels (the largest on a smartphone). Samsung's next flagship will then improve on that figures, although of course the difference between a 1/2.3" figure and a 1/2.0" can't exactly be called a jump. It's a single digit percentage argument with a 7.5 mm vs 8 mm sensor diagonal competition.
So to drift away from those not so overwhelming numbers, sources also say that this new sensor will be up for a mass production anytime soon so as to make it towards the next Samsung flagship which is rumored to be arriving on January, or at least as early as that. Nonetheless, we all know that these are just rumors and no solid proofs back up these reports, so it's better to control any sort of excitement you feel. But then again, most smartphone rumors turn out to be true, or at least they turn out to be near the truth instead of the exact opposite. But one thing is certain, Samsung is gonna up its game as what it has always done flagship after flagship. And if the company chooses to take a turn away from the predictable, it shall be one risky move that may probably be worth it.
