Former California Home of Painter Sam Francis Hitting Auction Block

The former Santa Monica home of famous painter Sam Francis will reportedly be going under the hammer Jan 30, 2014, according to some real estate reports.

The world has revelled in the blots and blotches, the abstract expressionism put on Canvas by Sam Francis, the famous painter. More recently in March 2013, a painting titled 'Symphony in Blue' sold for $1.4 million. The record price for a Sam Francis painting is $6.3 million.

Much like his paintings, his home is a creative abode. Designed by architect Christopher Sorensen, the residence looks nothing less than a resort. The home hit the listing market in 2012 with a $18.7 million price tag. However, such exquisite homes need time to explore and to find a suitable buyer.

The 0.45 acre compound comprises of two homes. Put together, the two homes account for about 12,500 square feet and have about 8 bedrooms, 13 bathrooms, a 950-bottle wine cellar, three steam rooms and a five car garage.

Interiors of the residence feature light hardwood flooring, floor-to-ceiling glass windows and doors. Outside, the home has an infinity pool, a swim-up bar and Japanese gardens complete with fountains and waterfalls.

About Sam Francis

Sam Francis served in the U.S. Army Air Corps until 1944. He took on painting as a hobby and grew in the field after receiving his B.A and M.A at the University of California. According to his official website:

He was greatly influenced by Abstract Expressionism particularly the works of Clyfford Still and Jackson Pollock. In his use of space on the canvas to allow free circulation of strong colour and the sensitivity to light Francis developed his own style by the time his studies had ended.

Francis passed away on Nov.4 1994 suffering from prostate cancer.
