"Kick-Ass" star Chloe Moretz will portray the finned Disney princess in the film adaptation.
Variety exclusively reported about the latest updates on the modern retelling of the fairytale.
"The Little Mermaid" is based on the fairytale written by Hans Christian Andersen. The story is about a young mermaid who wanted to become a human. It was after falling in love with the prince she saved from drowning. As of now, there is no news on the storyline, whether it will be true to the original yet "darker" storyline or will be based on the 1989 Disney film.
Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner from Working Title will produce alongside executive producers Liza Chasin and Amelia Granger. Joining them are Production EVP Erik Baiers and creative executive Chloe Yellin from Universal. It will be produced under Working Title and Universal Pictures.
Meanwhile, "War Horse" and "About Time" screenwriter Richard Curtis is currently in talks of writing the modern retelling of the beloved childhood character. He previously provided the script for various romantic comedies such as "Four Weddings and a Funeral," "Bridget Jones's Diary" and "Love Actually."
The 18-year-old Moretz will star in the upcoming live-action film as the mermaid named Ariel. She announced the news on her Twitter by sharing a screenshot of the Variety article.
"Been waiting a long time to tell you guys! #TheLittleMermaid (sic) is going to be a beautiful experience! Can't wait to show everyone my Mermaid!" Moretz said in her post.
The former child star has been eyed for the lead role even when "Bling Ring" director Sofia Coppola was attached to the project. However, Coppola left early this year as reported by Deadline. According to insiders, it was due to the creative differences between Coppola and the production company.
Moretz will appear in upcoming films such as "Neighbors 2" starring Zac Efron and Seth Rogen, "November Criminals" with Ansel Elgort. She will also appear in the film adaptation of the YA Novel "The 5th Wave" and Broad Green's "Brain On Fire."
