Amy Winehouse Biopic: Noomi Rapace to Play as Amy In Upcoming Film

"Prometheus" actress Noomi Rapace is in talks to portray Amy Winehouse and her tragic life in an upcoming biopic.

Deadline reported that the 35-year-old actress is in talks to lead the cast in the biopic helmed by Kirsten Sheridan. The Academy Award-nominated director previously worked alongside her father and sister in "In America."

The "Amy Winehouse" biopic will be built on the script written by Sheridan herself. It will be based on the tragic life of late soul and jazz singer who died due to alcohol poisoning at the age of 27. The multi-awarded British singer achieved international success with her two critically acclaimed albums, "Frank" and "Back to Black." She died in 2011.

"Amy's music is felt so deeply by the audience because it was deeply personal," Sheridan said.

"Her vulnerability was her strength. She was called many things - a diva, a lost soul preyed upon by tabloids, a tortured genius; our aim is an innovative, emotional and life-affirming approach as we go through the looking glass into her life and art."

The production company Lotus Entertainment will oversee the financial matters and the production internationally, while the CAA and UTA will handle the domestic right. Joshua Maurer and Alixandre Witlin (City Entertainment) will work alongside Tristan Orpen Lynch (Subotica) as producers. They are joined by executive producers Bill Johnson, Ara Keshishian, Angus Sutherland and Jim Seibel of Lotus Entertainment.

The Hollywood Reporter, on the other hand, clarified that the producers are working on getting the music rights from Universal and Sony. It was different from the first reported negotiations with Mitch, Winehouse's father who has a control over the singer's estate.

Rapace is known for playing the role of the mysterious hacker Lisbeth Salander in the Swedish film version of "The Girl With Dragon Tattoo," "The Girl Who Played with Fire" and "The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets' Nest." She recently starred in the 2015 film "Child 44" with Tom Hardy and Gary Oldman.
